- Title: Movers And Shakers
- Date: 17th November 1997
- Summary: A six part series about games and the people who play them. Games are those things that you play as children and aren't supposed to play as adults. But most of us never grow out of them. Millions of people regularly play games ranging from Monopoly to Mah Jong, from Subbuteo to Scrabble. It is a little known fact that more people in Britain now play more indoor games than outdoor sports. For the first time on television, Movers and Shakers explores the world of indoor games through intimate portraits of people whose lives are dominated by their passion for playing. For some, games are a leisure pursuit, for others, they are a way of life. Each programme offers a practical guide to a game while at the same time exploring the emotions behind the players and their enthusiasm. The characters describe their obsession, how they started, what they feel when playing, and the sense of community their game provides. The series also explores a spirit which is universal - the urge to compete. There is all the excitement of a televised sporting event, as Movers and Shakers brings board games to the small screen with gladiatorial struggles of epic proportions.
- Description:MOVERS AND SHAKERS: Scalextric This programme features a scalextric collector and also follows the fortunes of Wood Green Scalextric club in the build up to a special club race. Six teams of three will race their favourite GT sports cars, all modified to enhance their performance. Club members will also vote for the best turned out car. We meet Steve, the club secretary who built the 100 feet six lane track they race on in the church hall; Derek, the expert car builder who modifies cars on a lathe in his kitchen and tests them on a 40 foot track set up in his hallway. His team are called "Derextrix" and have their own printed T-shirts. Two young speed freaks, both called Paul, who in addition to racing Scalextric cars at the club, also race Slot cars which are twice as big and three times as fast as conventional Scalextric cars. We also follow the two Pauls on their day out, racing slot cars in the national championships in the pits at Silverstone. There will also be a full scale vintage Aston Martin race at the same event for them to drool over on the real race track. Richard Hardric's house in Newport is home to his collection of 1,000 Scalextric cars. A lyrical character who fantasises about being "Fangio in a Bugatti and Hunt in a McLaren - all before breakfast", he wants to be buried with his collection if his son does not wish to take possession of his pride and joy. At the moment his son is mad keen. We will follow them on a trip to the model shop to buy two Scalextric cars they have been waiting to come in for several weeks. Back at home they will race on the front drive. Richard's wife will not let them play indoors.
