Title:Unreported World Series 2001 - China: Handle with Care
Date:9th November 2001
Summary:Documentary looking at the economic growth of China and the price behind such economic success in terms of society and the treatment of workers. China's flirtation with capitalism has made many rich, but it has also left millions destitute. Jonathan Miller travels to Shenyang, in the north of the country, once an industrial heartland, but where industries have been going bankrupt at an unprecedented rate, with five million jobs having been lost in the last decade. Another thirty million jobs are expected to go across the country as a whole in the next five years. Miller also meets a 70-year-old man who has just been released from a labour camp where he was imprisoned for standing up for workers rights in Shenyang. Protests by sacked workers have been growing in a country where demonstrations are illegal.
Description:Critically acclaimed foreign affairs series offering an insight into the lives of people in some of the most neglected parts of the planet.
