- Summary: The Real Michael Barrymore charts the dramatic rise to prominence and spectacular fall from grace of one of Britain's best-loved family entertainers. It is the poignant and tragic story of a man in search of a surrogate family. A showbusiness genius, the adoration of his audience became a substitute for the domestic contentment that had for so long eluded him. His overwhelming need for domestic contentment and stability meant that for many years he subverted his own sexuality for fear it would alienate his audience and the few people closest to him. Ultimately, however,he tried to drown his private loneliness and uncertainty in drink and drugs, setting himself on a journey of self-destruction. This reached its climax in the early hours of 31st March 2001 when the body of a young man called Stuart Lubbock was dragged out of his swimming pool by a fellow guest.
