Summary:In the 400 years since the Norman Conquest, castles had come to dominate the landscapes of Britain. But by the beginning of the 17th century the age of castles seemed to be over. Long centuries of peace had made them redundant, many had fallen into ruin. Then suddenly, in the spring of 1642, this peace was shattered. In the final episode of the series historian Marc Morris reveals how during the Civil War the castle re-emerged for one last stand, as an important instrument of policy and war in the conflict between Royalists and Parliamentarians. Over 20,000 people would die in the defence of over 200 strongholds. And in their defence castles would confront the most lethal technologies of the age - the cannon and the mortar.
