- Title: Half Ton Man
- Date: 6th February 2006
- Description:Part of the Bodyshock series, this documentary follows the story of American Patrick Deuel who is morbidly obese and is literally eating himself to death. We join Patrick as the world's largest man weighing in at 76 stone is taken to hospital with just days to live. Patrick undergoes a life saving gastric bypass carried out by a fellow over-eater Dr Harris. Dr Harris sympathises with Patrick as he has also had a gastric bypass operation due to a compulsion to overeat. This film explores the reasons as to why some people become morbidly obese and others do not and looks at the debate between genetics and environmental factors. Despite his operation Patrick Deuel thinks that he can continue to eat what ever he wants and his wife Edith Deuel does not disagree. Several interviews with other morbidly obese Americans sheds some light as to why the compulsion to eat is so difficult to overcome. Narrator: Lucy Briers Produced and directed by: Katinka Newman
