Father Ted Crilly dreams of an easy life and a parish in Las Vegas, but these dreams are constantly shattered by the weird and wonderful house guests and events that always seem to occur on Craggy Island. Father Ted lives with young Father Dougal McGuire who lives in a world of oblivion and needs constant looking after, and Father Jack Hacket; a semi-conscious alcoholic who spends his days sleeping in his chair, dreaming of girls or shouting abuse and demanding more drink.
