NEWS: ARCHIVAL GEMS FROM TOKYO IN OUR REUTERS DIGITISATION PROJECT

4th December 2024

We have uncovered some fascinating archival gems from Japan as part of our large scale project to digitize thousands of tapes from Reuters news bureaus around the world.

With nearly 650 hours of footage from 614 tapes, the Tokyo news bureau archive spans the 1980s through to the early 2010s.

We are still working our way through many hours of footage, but have already uncovered some fantastic footage from the early noughties. Some of the highlights include:

  • Aerial shots of the Fukushima power plant, 10 years before the nuclear disaster (footage of the Fukushima nuclear disaster coming soon)
  • Some rather adorable Red Pandas at Tokyo zoo
  • Sumo wrestlers preparing to compete
  • The eruption of Mount Usu as hospital workers nearby witness the scenes

While we are working with Iron Mountain to digitize the vast majority of content for this project, for the Toyko bureau archive we’ve collaborated with Aflo. We’d like to mention a particular thank you to Keiko Takazawa who has curated the best content for us to digitize, and to Mark Eite for coordinating.

We will provide more updates on our Social Channels, so follow us on LinkedIn, X and YouTube  for all the latest on this project. Keep an eye out on reuters.screenocean.com where you can search and download all the new content.
