NEWS: LATEST FILMS PRODUCED UNDER OUR NEWSFILM FOR EDUCATION SERVICE

10th September 2024

It has been fantastic to see a selection of stunning films created as part of our Newsfilm for Education service.

The Newsfilm for Education project provides academic institutions unprecedented access to our Reuters News Archive. Students and staff are able to access, download and weave clips in to their films as part of their coursework, which can be shared non-commercially online at exhibitions, festivals and events promoting students’ work.

Dr Ciara Chambers, who heads the department at University College Cork told us, “Having access to over one million video clips covering every conceivable topic has inspired great creativity in our students as well as facilitating them with the opportunity to screen their work publicly in ways that were impossible before. They have learned how to consider the licensing terms associated with archival reuse and how to effectively research footage across decades, locations and subject matter while familiarizing themselves with the content of one of the largest and most renowned video archives in the world."

She explained the students have been equipped with real life scenarios in copyright clearance: "Having this unprecedented level of access has replicated a 'real-life' model of copyright clearance, equipping our students with the essential skills needed for working with production companies, broadcasters or as independent filmmakers in the future. This has been a creative, practical and transformative learning experience for our students, many of whom are now embedding archival material in a wide range of traditional and experimental practical projects."

We are really proud to see the growing success of The Newsfilm for Education project which reaches out and provides our Reuters historical archive footage to Gen Z who have grown up in a fast paced digital landscape and world of tech. It enables a new generation of storytellers to create visually compelling narratives and content, forming a new part of history in the making.
