Over the last 10 years there has been an explosion in video content as we produce more video than ever before. It’s predicted there will be 48 billion digital video viewers in the world by the end of 2023, a jaw dropping statistic to absorb!

As we settle in to 2023, we take a look at some of the video content & stock footage trends to look out for:

Storytelling & authenticity
Stories cultivate emotion, allow us to connect, help us to understand and relate. The pandemic saw a rise in documentaries, portraying real stories, capturing lifestyles and cultures from around the world. In narrating these stories, there has been a rise in the demand for archive footage as a way to seamlessly blend in historical footage enabling stories to come alive. The way we portray stories has seen a greater appetite for authenticity, audiences are becoming hooked on true, original content. Mobile phone footage or interviews on the streets as events unfold all help draw the viewer in to the story.

The rise of the video creator and short form content 
With the dawning of the Social Media age and the rise of video sharing apps like Youtube and TikTok, it’s impossible to ignore the rise of video creators and short form content. Short form videos were projected to make up 90% of all internet traffic in 2022, the rise has been phenomenal and a great way to get your content seen across social media platforms. It’s worth noting, long form content is performing just as well across tv productions. Binge watching series of high end dramas being released across platforms like Netflix and Disney, entice viewers in as they enjoy cinematic style dramas and documentaries from the comfort of their own homes.

Virtual production studios 
Creating stunning and imaginative worlds and visual effects through computer generated images, virtual production studios offer greater flexibility, efficiency and cost savings in the production process. Enabling elaborate, detailed sets and environments to be virtually set up remotely, you can quickly and easily drop in an array of stunning visual effects to really amplify a production. Collaborating and remote working becomes a lot easier as teams can easily communicate and formulate ideas and concepts, regardless of physical locations. It’s no surprise virtual productions have become widely used and something we will potentially see increasing ever more over the next couple of years.

As technology advances alongside the increase in digital streaming and apps, it will be interesting to see developments transpire. It’s clear the demand for video content and tv production is here to stay, maybe the rise of AI and VR is next this year? We’ll have to watch this space and see!
