Residents of Venice were shocked on Sunday (28May2023) to discover that the city's Grand Canal had turned fluorescent green. Local authorities have collected water samples and opened an urgent investigation into the mysterious phenomenon. Some have blamed the water around the famous Rialto Bridge changing colour on activists, though this is unconfirmed. Local police were examining CCTV to determine whether the incident is a stunt to coincide with the Volgalonga regatta taking place this weekend. In 1968 Argentine artist Nicolás García Uriburu dyed the waters of the Grand Canal green in order to raise awareness of ecological issues. In a tweeted statement, Italian emergency services personnel wrote: “A fluorescent patch colored part of the Grand Canal and the lagoon green at #Venezia : samples and technical assistance from #vigilidelfuoco to @arpaveneto operators who are carrying out analyzes to establish the nature of the substance in the water.”
