- Title: 365 AT Kurz reax on clashes
- Date: 30th June 2020
- Description:Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz says he has summoned Turkish ambassador over clashes at Kurdish rally Austrian Chancellor Kurz reacted today in very drastic words to the recent conflicts between Turkish right-wing groups and Kurdish rallies in Vienna. Sebastian Kurz said that on the one hand this was a consequence of a wrong immigration and integration policy - on the other hand, Turkey was deliberately instrumentalising young people. Following the violent clashes between Kurds and Turks in Vienna-Favoriten, the Turkish Ambassador had been asked to come to the Foreign Ministry on Monday for a discussion. On the other side Turkey has criticized the way the authorities in Vienna handled the Kurdish protests and had summoned Austria's ambassador. The violent demonstrations between Kurds and Turks in Vienna during the previous week had resulted in 7 injured police officers, 11 arrests, 57 charges. Shotlist - SOUNDBITE (German) Sebastian Kurz, Austrian Chancellor: "I would like to react to what has happened, to the clashes that have happened in Vienna in the district of Favoriten. In my eyes it is important to constate that this is unbearable. It must be clear that such things cannot take place in Vienna. In Austria we stand for peaceful coexistence and these conflicts are imported from Turkey and it cannot be tolerated that these conflicts are carried out in Vienna in Favoriten." TC 00:00:38 "Those who feel a need to fight street disputes shall do that in Turkey, but in Austria, there is no place for this. That’s why I asked the Minister of the Interior a Zero Tolerance policy and I am very grateful to the police for their efforts which have already led to the arrestation of 11 persons, among them one of the supposed initiators." TC 00:01:06 "Furthermore we have summoned the Turkish ambassador to make clear to Turkey that this must stop, that Turkey must stop trying to have an influence on people here and to instrumentalize them for their objectives. Turkey’s answer that there was police brutality must be harshly rejected, we will continue consequent police inserts and I am glad and grateful for the police deployment. The police did everything to avoid further escalation of the situation, but at the same time has taken decisive action against the perpetrators of violence and is now acting against the initiators." TC 00:01:52 "Furthermore it is important to verify which contacts and lines exist with Turkey but also with different Turkish associations in Austria and these connections must be cut. Some say this is not an integration issue, I strongly disagree with this opinion, this is a result of non-functional integration and failed immigration policy." TC 00:02:24 "I don’t expect much support from Turkey, because I know very well what Turkey is trying here: Turkey tries to use Turks in Europe for sowing discord and here and there for creating the mood for Turkey. And in my eyes, this is abusing people with Turkish roots who live in Europe, whether in Austria, Germany or anywhere else and that’s something we take every precaution to prevent." TC 00:02:59 "The Minister for Integration will quickly realize the Documentation Centre for Political Islam, we know it’s all connected, Turkish nationalism, political Islam, readiness for violence, all this is connected and that’s what countermeasures must be taken and we must become active against. The point is that in case of unguided immigration the debates we have now on the conflicts between Turks and Kurds will have soon the same debates on Chechens and other groups." TC 00:03:26 "How do the people who live in Favoriten merit to see such scenes on their doorstep, and how do the policemen and policewomen merit that they have to enter into an operation where they come out injured, where people throw fist-sized stones at them. Meanwhile we count seven injured policepersons, we will not accept that. On the eleven arrested persons until now we count two Turkish citizens – we have arrested several persons who have tried to break through barriers or who have thrown stones on policepersons."
