- Title: 351 AT Kurz EU package
- Date: 19th June 2020
- Description:"There must be no entry into a debt union through the back door," says Federal Chancellor Sebastian Kurz Austria underlined its position that the planned reconstruction package had to be linked to strict conditions. "There must be no entry into a debt union through the back door", said Federal Chancellor Sebastian Kurz on Friday in Vienna. The package must be a strictly limited, one-off action. Austria attached importance to the fact that the planned billion-euro loans and subsidies should only be spent on meaningful projects such as digitisation and ecologisation. It showed that projects such as travel vouchers or an unconditional basic income - if financed by subsidies - do not meet with Austria's approval. Shotlist - SOUNDBITE (German) Sebastian Kurz, Federal Chancellor of Austria: "There is now a discussion on a further recovery fund. Basically we agree with this discussion, we think it is a good thing to invest money beyond the ESM, but there are still some unsolved questions. First of all it is important to us that this recovery fund must be a one-off action. It must not be an entry into a European debt union by the back door. That’s why there must be a tight time limit. 00:00:35 - Kurz: "The second question is who pays and how much. In this context the relationship of the grants to the loans must still be discussed. The third point is probably the most important one, to know where the money shall go and what it shall be used for." 00:01:00 - Kurz: "This includes the question of whether the money is linked to reforms, does it aim to make us competitive, does it make us invest into digitalization and ecologization, in this case we think it is good and correct. Or will it deflagrate in projects such as an unconditional basic income or travel vouchers or other measures currently discussed in some European countries."
