- Date: 15th June 2020
- Description:First Austrian Airlines scheduled flights take off again from Vienna airport After almost three-month break due to the COVID-19 restrictions, the first Austrian Airlines scheduled flight took off again on Monday at the Vienna airport. About 100 passengers were on board of flight OS 111 to Munich shortly before 6 a.m. being welcomed by the Austrian station team. With 12 out of the total of 80 aircrafts, the Austrian Airlines are returning to the scheduled air service. At the beginning they will operate at some 20 destinations, including Frankfurt, Zurich, Brussels and Larnaca. New destinations are to be added every week and depending on demand. In July the company plans to resume long-haul flights. The use of masks remains compulsory inside the airport and on board. Other airlines also aim to resume operations in the Vienna Airport, but the current figures are far from those before the coronavirus crisis. It can be felt that it is not like before the crisis, and there are definitely more hygiene measures than before.” - VOXPOP (German) Klaus Szlovik, business traveller: “I will never again get a parking place as easily as today, the check-in will never again be as fast as it is today, but I hope this is the last time things work like that.” - VOXPOP (German) Mahmutur Rahman, business traveller: “It is very special, when you look at the airport, it is nearly empty and not many passengers. Normally I fly to Munich every week, normally the aircraft is fully booked, and it does good to have more people on board.” - VOXPOP (German) Waltraud Hermann, tourist: "I am happy to be allowed to leave and to fly wherever. That’s the only reason why I fly, only for private purpose. For the Austrian Airlines staff it is important that we fly, and for us it is important that the flights are operated.” - MS People going through electronic check-in turnstiles - MS Aircraft - SOUNDBITE (German) Alexis von Hoensbroech, CEO Austrian Airlines: “For us it is a very emotional moment. You know, we have spent three months when the whole business was stopped on the ground, and not only our aircrafts were on the ground, but the whole future of the corporation was unclear, we did not know if we would fly again, when we would fly again and if the Austrian Airlines would survive.” - SOUNDBITE (German) Julian Jäger, CEO Vienna Airport SA: “This is a very positive day for the Vienna airport, after three months of quasi deadlock the Austrian restarts today." - VS Interior aircraft with passengers seated - MS Aircraft door being closed - VS Airplane taking off
