- Title: 342 AT Police monitoring body
- Date: 12th June 2020
- Description:New independent body to monitor police violence is to be set up by the government by 2021 Deputy Director General of Public Security Reinhard Schnakl said on Friday that a new independent body to monitor police violence is to be set up by the government by 2021. Pushed ahead by the latest developments in the US after the violent death of George Floyd by a police officer, the Austrian government is now obliged to implement what was agreed in the coalition talks, namely to set up an independent body for police violence which should investigate and prosecute all kinds of racist and ill-treatments by the police. The Austrian Federal Chancellor Sebastian Kurz has issued a work order on Friday morning to develop a concept for the complaint body. It is still unclear yet whether the Home Ministry should have the chairmanship or not and if the body staff consists of police representatives or independent experts. Sure is, it should start at the beginning of the next year. The Austrian police has already started to monitor studiously the police staff interacting with the citizens, through implementing the use of bodycams and so-called docu-teams. Allegations of abuse by police staff were made 317 times in Austria within the last year.
