- Description:Burgenland authorities plan to supply water to Lake Neusiedl with low water level Lake Neusiedl in Burgenland, in southern Austria, has a worryingly low water level. The lake not only threatens to continue losing water, it could even dry out completely. The province of Burgenland has set up a task force to prevent the lake from drying out. According to the experts in water management, there is no other option than to supply water from outside. Around 150 years ago, Lake Neusiedl dried up. Due to climate change, the lake threatens to dry out again. The level has been measured since 1965, and this May the water level was lower than ever before. But it is also important that it is a solution that is feasible and implementable.” - VS press conference - The expert showing graphics of water level development - SOUNDBITE (German) Christian Sailer, head of water management of Burgenland: “When we look at this worst-case-scenario from this year, and if there is still no precipitation and the water level continues to drop, it could of course, happen in the next three or four years [that the lake will dry out completely]. These scenarios are always based on assumptions, but they show us where to work.” - Boats at the lakeside of Lake Neusiedl - VS lakeside of Lake Neusiedl showing the low water level
