- Description:First mass at St. Stephen's Cathedral attended by worshipers but with social distancing measures Public masses have been allowed again in Austria since yesterday, Friday 15th May, under special COVID-19 restrictions. Yesterday evening at 18.00 local time there was again the first public mass in St. Stephen's Cathedral – the biggest church in Austria. A maximum of 300 people can attend. F.ex.normally on the 24th of December there are 5.000 people in the church! The mass was conducted by cathedral priest Toni Faber. Minister Susanne Raab was also in the church. The mayor of Vienna, Michael Ludwig, also joined in the celebration. There are special security rules, f.ex. all visitors must wear face masks. And the special bell “pummerin” was rung at the beginning of the mass. It is rung only on very special occasions.
