- Title: 298 AT Culture Minister resigns
- Date: 15th May 2020
- Description:Austrian culture minister quits amid criticism in crisis and as reopening plans are announced After continuing criticism concerning her poor corona-crisis management, Austrian state secretary for cultural affairs, Ulrike Lunacek (Green Party), stepped back this mornig. Over the week-end Werner Kogler, Vice Chancellor and party head of the Green Party, will hold talks to find an appropriate successor for Lunacek. From 2009 until 2017, Lunacek was a Member of the European Parliament (MEP). During that time, she served as Vice President of the European Parliament, Member of the Greens/EFA group in the European Parliament and head of delegation of the Austrian Greens in the European Parliament. Two hours after Lunacek`s resignation Vice Chancellor Werner Kogler (Green Party) and Health minister Rudolf Anschober (Green Party) presented the gradual reopening plan for the cultural and arts sector in Austria. Every event will have a kind of Corona representative who is the contact person for the authorities. In a first step, from May 29th, cultural events will be enabled for up to 100 people for both indoor and outdoor, under certain conditions. In a second step, from July 1st, the same will be done for events in the arts and culture sector with up to 250 people. The cinemas will also be able to reopen from July 1st, with the same number of participants. In a third step, from August 1, cultural events will be possible for up to 500 people. Also from August 1st, there will be a fourth step for events in the arts and culture for 500 to 1000 people. But this will only be possible with a special security concept. Shotlist - ZOOM IN Ulrike Lunacek arriving at presser - SOUNDBITE (GERMAN) Ulrike Lunacek, State Secretary for cultural affairs (Green party): “Although we had announced concrete measures and had had many conversations and video conferences with representatives from different areas of art and culture, I found that I could no longer achieve a positive effect with my strengths and that I was no longer given a chance. I didn't make this decision easy for me. But I have come to the conclusion that I will resign as Secretary of State. I make room for someone else who hopefully can achieve more in this crisis situation than I have succeeded in doing.” - PAN TO LEFT Kogler and Anschober arriving at presser in Chancellery - SOUNDBITE (GERMAN) Werner Kogler, Vice Chancellor of Austria (Green Party): “The world is no longer the same as before this pandemic, as it was before this virus. And this virus has brought special effects and special cuts, especially in the field of art and culture, because of course the space for the viewers is very important; the spectators and listeners, all those who want to enjoy art and culture again and want to be able to participate, as we have a diverse art scene in Austria. I think we have to live together with the virus now - also in the arts and culture. And we also have to learn together how we can outsmart the virus, how we create opportunities that we can unlock gradually and allow new things to happen.” - MS presser Kogler Anschober - SOUNDBITE (GERMAN) Rudolf Anschober, Health Minister of Austria (Green Party): “Namely at least a meter away from the neighbor, and every event will have a kind of Corona representative who is the contact person for the authorities so that there is a good communication process here. In a first step, from May 29th, we will enable cultural events for up to 100 people for both indoor and outdoor, under certain conditions. In a second step we will do the same for events in the arts and culture sector with up to 250 people from July 1st. It's a big, a very big step. The cinemas will also be able to reopen from July 1st, with the same number of participants. And then, ladies and gentlemen, there will be a further step from August 1, namely for events for up to 500 people - a very big step. Also from August 1st, there will be a fourth step - also under the same conditions - for events in the arts and culture for 500 to 1000 people. But this is only possible with a special security concept.”
