He drew a positive balance after 25 years of Austrian membership in the EU despite weaknesses in the coronavirus crisis. Shotlist - SOUNDBITE (German) Sebastian Kurz, Chancellor of Austria: "I am grateful to be living in Austria and I am grateful that Austria is part of the European Union. Austria is a small but very active member state and we are of course benefitting from the united Europe. A few decades ago such an economic success and such a long peaceful period would have been unbelievable on our continent. 00:33 - The European Union is the most important successful project and the greatest achievement of the 20th century and it is our duty to be constantly working on the European Union, to make it better and to lead it successfully through the 21st century. 00:50 - At the beginning of the COVID-19 crisis, there were definitely difficulties, but we can and should learn from these difficulties at the European level, and I hope that the EU emerges even stronger from the crisis. 01:03 - It is important that all member states reduce the number of infections as soon as possible and that they succeed to control the corona crisis as we do in Austria, then an economic reconstruction will be possible. We know that those who can best cope with the crisis in terms of health policy will emerge from the crisis in better economic shape. The faster all European countries manage to do so, the faster we can reduce the border closures and go back to normal business."
