- Date: 29th April 2020
- Description:Austria Chancellor says he "wants economic recovery" to be as successful as the managing of the COVID-19 outbreak In a joint presser Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz and Vice Chancellor Werner Kogler informed on plans to restart Austrian economy. Shotlist - SOUNDBITE (German) Sebastian Kurz, Austrian Chancellor: "Just as successfully as we have managed to reduce the number of new infections in Austria, we now want to be successful in bringing about an economic comeback for Austria. It is our aim to lead back the Austrian business place to its known strength and to bring back as many people as possible to full employment. - "As heads of government the vice-chancellor and I have agreed on three objectives we want to realize together. ONE the tax relief for people shall not only come but it shall come quickly because we want working people working people to have more left to live and that those who often don’t earn the biggest bonuses have left more from their income to live. SECOND the relief for the economy so that jobs can be maintained and new jobs can be created. And THIRD investments into digitization, climate protection and regionalization." - SOUNDBITE (German) Werner Kogler, Austrian Vice Chancellor:"And if we now want to hold certain production processes in Europe, to bring them back or to rebuild them it is important that Austria is in the lead. That concerns health and medical goods but this also concerns the whole alimentation and food safety area, and in Austria we have a big know how when it is on knowledge and technicians, and on the other hand we have a marvelous agriculture, then why don’t we use that. This could also lead to a favouring regional products and disadvantage (in a positive sense) others in terms of their CO2 content. I think that the WTO and other organizations will have to rethink their current understanding of the economy so that these considerations that we also want to present on a European level get more importance, then we can say, we have learned something from the crisis." - SOUNDBITE (German) Sebastian Kurz, Austrian Chancellor: "The vice chancellor and I will meet with the Lufthansa manager, our interests are clear, it is on one hand the business place Austria a on the other hand the jobs in Austria. We will begin negotiations but we will certainly not provide support services for a German company without having an advantage therefrom as the Republic of Austria." - "We are in touch with our neighbor countries, with other countries also on the European level and I think that the objective must be that after fighting against the disease, after maintaining the infection rete low we must regain our freedom, and this includes the freedom to travel into secure countries. If the infection rates in Salzburg, in Tyrol and in Bavaria are low, it does not make a difference if we go from Salzburg to Tyrol of from Salzburg to Bavaria or vice versa."
