- Description:Austrian firefighters struggle to bring huge reed fire at Lake Neusiedl Seewinkel Nationalpark under control A giant reed fire has raged in the Lake Neusiedl Seewinkel National Park since noon yesterday. As of this morning, two Black Hawk helicopters from the Austrian Armed Forces have been deployed to extinguish the huge fire. A firewall up to 500 meters wide stands in the middle of the reed belt. The flames cannot be put out from land or water. Several fire departments from the surrounding towns, which are specially trained for use with helicopters, are in use. They have received support from the Austrian Federal Armed Forces in the morning. The two Black Hawk of the Federal Army are equipped with extinguishing containers that each hold 3,000 liters of water. The wind and dryness that is currently prevailing keep the flames blazing. According to initial estimates, 5 square kilometers of reeds have been burned to date. The reason for the blaze is not yet known. The fact is that when we were alerted we found a very well developed reed fire, which spread quickly due to the geographical location - poor accessibility from land and sea - and covered a total of almost 5 square kilometers of reed area.” SOUNDBITE (GERMAN) Harald Grabenhofer, National Park Lake Neusiedl: “Greylag geese are currently sitting on their nests. Certainly, it has caught a few clutches. Even ducks that have now hatched here. At least it is still so early that the full breeding season in the reeds is not yet underway.” Black Hawk helicopter flying into 500 meters wide fume wall with extinguishing container Black Hawk helicopter flying into 500 meters wide fume wall with extinguishing container (zoom-out) another Black Hawk helicopter flying PAN 500 meters wide blaze and fume wall
