Most patients with COVID-19 infections who need an intensive care unit, stay for up to three weeks on these intensive care stations. Therefore, the availability of enough intensive care units is crucial to treat all patients. At the largest hospital in Vienna, a special COVID-19 unit has been formed and more units have been prepared, patients with other illnesses have been moved to another intensive care unit in the hospital. So far there is enough capacity, but Austria has not reached the peak yet, this could change. At the AKH – hospital COVID-19 patients with additional health problems like heart diseases are treated. In Vienna there are over 1000 Intensive care units available, 755 beds are used for patients with other health problems, 22 patients with COVID are treated on intensive care units in Vienna.
