Description:Viennese light candles at monument commemorating the Black Death
In Vienna as in many cities of Austria, there are monuments erected to memorize the Pest plague epidemic.
The Plague Column or Trinity Column, as it is officially called, was built after the great plague epidemic in 1679. During the pest plague nearly 80000 people died in Vienna and surrounding. Emperor Leopold I at that time promised to build a column when the epidemic is over.
Now people concerned about the new Corona pandemic lit up candles in front of the plague column in the Vienna city center, also children's drawings and letters are attached to the column. "Protect us from the coronavirus" is written on one drawing, "Please dear God help" on another.
