The 63 year old man had come back from holiday in Italy, the medical crisis committee of Vienna informed that the man has died last night at the Vienna Kaiser-Franz-Josef Hospital (KFJ). He was infected one month ago, He was a diabetes patient with hypertension and bowel disease, which were all under medical control, however apart from this, he was generally a fit person who had spent holidays with his family in Italy. Nevertheless, these problems in addition on the COVID-19 virus led to his death. Shotlist - SOUNDBITE (German) Christoph Wenisch, Director 4th Medical Department Kaiser Franz Josef Hospital: "The first thing that always collapses after a Coronavirus infection is the lung. In case of an acute lung damage due to the infection path, there are relevant ventilation systems which lead to stability. Until now we were successful with this proceeding in all cases but one, the one we have to announce today that he has died unfortunately, but the lung issue was not the only problem in this case, but there were additional organ failures that appeared subsequently due to pre-exisiting conditions and accomplying illnesses. This concerned organs which were related directly and indirectly with the lungs, namely kidney, leaver and cardiovascular organs. In the intensive care jargon we talk about multiple organ dysfunction, which if not manageable by intensive care leads inevitably to the patient’s death. At this moment the Coronavirus isn't anymore in the focus – due to the long duration of the illness, the virus was already tested negative with this patient, he has not been very infectious anymore, the problem is that the Coronavirus added an important damage in his body, this damage did not repair itself nor could be repaired by the measures we can take by modern intensive care.
