Date:29th March 1999
Description:SEE RECORD 127639 FOR SHOTLIST
In the rush to protect the environment the human cost of destruction of tropical rainforests is often overlooked. Twenty years ago British explorer Robin Hanbury-Tenison led a Royal Geographical Society expedition to the rainforest of Mulu in Borneo. It was there that he met and befriended Nyapun,a member of the nomadic Penan tribe. Renowned for their intimate knowledge of their homeland, the Penan were the last of the rainforest nomads on Borneo. By the late 1970s however the destruction of the forest was beginning to force the tribe to settle. Robin left Mulu in 1978 with the future of Nyapun and his people in doubt. Twenty years and much forest decimation later,Robin made an emotional return to Mulu hoping to retrace his steps and find his long lost friend Nyapun.
